September 16, 2000 started off mellow enough, I got to the Gentry's house around 11 am and
we headed off for the Shaqtacular Event at the Universal Ampitheatre. I guess it was like
$1000 to get into this thing and the money went to the Shaq foundation which then was to
find its way into the needy. We got there and had some $5 an hour moron security guard
yelling at us about crossing some street and getting run over so we did what we always did
and kept walking towards him saying "What" "Why" until we got across
and told the idiot we were skating in the event and were helping pay his salary and he
eventually put his rent-a-cop attitude aside and we shoved past him. Now I had never been
to a Shaq event and wasnt aware of the stupid games they played like pass the basketball
the a toilet plunger but whatever we were there to skate and one half of the Red Bull ramp
was there courtesy of Spohn Ranch so the
session started. The skaters there were Phil Hajal, Chris Livingston and Chris Gentry.
After a few celebrity style photos and a shot of Shaq and Butterbean together we decided
to head down to behind the Pond of Anahiem were Seth Enslow was going to do a 178 foot
jump during some Freestyle Competition in the riverbead.
I had
never seen a Freestyle Competition up close so I was anxious to check it out and we again
barged into the athletes area telling them we were part of the event to avoid the healthy
$25 entrance fee. After running around with the NDX boys, Seth was getting ready to make
his 178 foot jump. We were all kinda standing around while he was getting ready,
then he went and checked out the landing and next thing you know he did the jump and
nobody was ready for it. Since the crowd wasn't ready, he did it again and we managed to
get a clip of that down on the site for you. After eating a little dinner with that crowd
it was time for a little break and off to the Soul Bowl.
We
arrived at the Soul Bowl at about 10pm and had a little trouble with the non
skating moron at the front door who insisted on charging a skater of Chris's
caliber a $10 entry fee. After he realized who he was dealing with, we
passed through and got in a little skating. Now this was supposed to be a
save the soul bowl party but from the looks of the turnout, they are
probably tearing out all the ramps as I am writing this. So anyhow the mini
ramps were unavailable for skating when we got there because of the band on
one side and the little high school mosh pit on the other side so everybody
took a couple of turns in the bowl and the next thing I knew the cops were
there and managed to arrest somebody so I took a shot of that and left. All
in all a pretty eventfull day with the Gentry's I would say..
